Yesterday I'd come back from a hack and tied Ammi up outside his stable, loosened the girth and went into the tackroom to take off hat/gloves etc. I heard a kerfuffle outside and turned round to see Ammi pulling back as far as he could, obviously having spooked himself at something (not unusual) but the binder twine didn't give - so he pulled the tie up ring off the wall together with a large chunk of wood and bolted up the track with the wood clattering round his feet, making matters worse.
Somehow he got rid of the wood in bits everywhere (must have trodden on it I think, or maybe he trod on the binder twine) and I eventually caught him at the top of the track just before he got onto the road. There was a fair bit of traffic yesterday and he was in a blind panic so I dread to think what would have happened.
He tore off a shoe but otherwise seems OK apart from even more twitchy than usual, not surprisingly, though I'll get someone to check him over because at the least he'll have very sore muscles in his neck.
I just wanted to warn people - and coincidentally there's a thread on Arabian-Lines about this happening to someone else's horse, except he trod on the wood and broke his neck - a real tragedy. Does anyone know of any old-fashioned twine that will actually break? I don't want to use one of the bungees because I wouldn't have been able to get there in time to undo the quick release clip - I want something that will break if necessary.
