We're needing to get some really effective fly deterrent - Gus has been demented with his bites recently. I've had Deosect suggested to me by the vet, but have read of horses having quite a bad reaction to it (though it did appear that the person had misread the directions and made it up far too strongly, duh).
Just wondered if anyone had any experience of it, good or bad?

I use deosect on Silver which was reccomended by the vet. ALthough it is incredibly strong and pungent, you are meant to use 10ml deosect to 500ml water for a horse and you spray or sponge on the whole solution and you are meant to do this once per week but Silver is so badly affected by the flies that she could have it on every day which your not meant to do.
So when the flies are bad and driving her demented i use the deosect and then put her in her Rambo Protector which is treated with something. I have yet to find something that is effective that you can use on a daily basis, but would say otherwise that the deosect is fantastic. I use it on myself when there are lots of flies about and i am at a show or when i was previously going out hacking and the flies don't come near me. Might work better on Gus than it does Silver but it is expensive, i think my vet charged £31 plus vat per bottle but lasts a long time

I doubt that you can wait a fortnight but i could have taken some to the group show with me for you to try

My vet recommended Coopers fly spray for Gaby last year. I used it on her as well as a fly rug and a Cachel fly mask. It certainly did the trick.

I've tried Coopers in the past and it didn't work for me. RB, thanks for the offer but as you say we can't wait another 2 weeks! So have decided to give it a try - will let you know if Gus gives it the thumbs up ;D

I have used Deosect for the first time this year and have found it fab stuff. I use it every 2 weeks and as RB said you dilute it down prior to use. None of my lot have reacted to it at all and the flies have been nothing like as bad round them as with normal fly sprays. The only think that it hasn't worked on is the dreaded midges!!
