My mare is lame again. This is the 4th time now in the last year and it's really starting to grate on my nerves. This mare isn't mine, but it's a really long story.
Her owner is very ill and the mare was bred by a friend of mine. Long story, short, a friend of the owners got in touch with my friend to see if she could take the mare back whilst the owner was ill. My friend wasn't in a position to take Kalidah, so she wound up with me. She is a sweet soul, but I do feel there is something more serious with this re-occuring lameness and my friend has tried to get hold of the owner several times unsuccessfully to see what she wants to do about it. There has been no contact from the owner since September last year and I'm begining to wonder if she is okay.
The vet's aren't sure what it may be and want to investiage further (the word arthritis have been used), but I'm not prepared to pay for the expense of it all and since I doubt the owner has her insured, I don't want to have to claim my insurance over this, as it will put the premium up for the rest of the horses (blanket policy) and although I feel a bit mean about it all, at the end of the day the owner could well improve health wise and just take her horse back........something I am fully prepared for and always have in the back of my mind.
If I was doing a lot of hard fast work with this horse I could understand it, but I actually haven't ridden her since last October and have only in the last week started to bring her back into work for 20 mins a day. She hasn't done anything strenious since I got her in December 2008 and I'm now wondering if she was perhaps plagued with lameness before she came back to Scotland. She was never sick or sorry prior to my friend selling her at 3 years old, but she is now rising 8 and constantly plagued with something..........lameness, mud fever, nervousness, weaving, bad traveller (but bizarely a great loader!!) to name but a few. It's sad how a great horse can be so messed up within the space of 3 years isn't it?
Why is nothing ever simple?! I could just give horses up at times!
On the plus side, I climbed back on Merlyn today for the first time since I backed him last July and he was brilliant! So I guess every cloud and all that! ;D
