My poor boy is very lame. He has been at the clyde vet hospital for the last 2 days and they cant find what is wrong with him He has stood for most of his x rays with no sedation, he is just too sore to move. At first we thought he had fractured something but tons of x rays and scans later revealed nothing!!!! I have him home now for box rest and to see if there will be any improvement. I just cant understand this, he went from being 100% to now hardly being able to weight bear on the leg. Heartbreaking to watch him try and turn round in his box, my beautiful boy

Hi Susan, Hugs to you & your boy!
I trust they've checked for the obvious eg. an abscess brewing, a thorn stuck in the frog, I've even heard of a small piece of glass getting trapped in the frog and causing a horse to go hopping lame. Hope you get an answer soon!! Jx

Susan I am so sorry to hear this....did they scan the leg? wonder if it is neuropathic type pain affecting the nerves? that wouldnt show up on x-ray but can be severely debilitating in humans? just a thought, I wish him a speedy recovery, sending you big hugs from Darcy and Me xxxxx LIZ xxx

Going to have to check him throughout the night , he is struggling to turn round in his box and I am worried if he lies down he wont be able to get back up. He also keeps on holding his leg up to me to tell me its so sore. The vet told me to give him more bute, that gave him a few hours this afternoon to have a lie down and sleep ( I dozed with him, still picking the shavings out of my hair!!) Everything points to it being an abscess but he does not react to hoof testers, there is no strong digital pulse and all the x rays could not find an abscess tracking. We are all at a loss as to why he is so lame and seems to be getting worse!!!!

Really hope you get to the bottom of this and I'm sure you will. Maybe I'M talking out of place here - but a second opinion? I did and glad I did. R Syme in Strathaven practice is brilliant. Very sure your beautiful boy will get through this. x

Still no improvement today, he is eating and drinking fine, but you can see how much pain he is in. I have Jenny Allison coming out tonight to give him a massage , he must be so sore holding his leg with the pain. Thanks for your kind offer Kaye and Elizabeth, everyone has been very supportive. I am not so worried about him getting back to his feet, he seems to have found a knack to getting up without too much stress. 5 of the vets at Clyde (including Andrew McDermott) all have looked at him now, and are still not sure what he has done......

Really sorry to read about your boy's trouble. Hope they get to the bottom of it soon.
I had a gelding who couldn't walk, was sweating profusely, and holding his leg up to anyone who went past. I was called. He could hardly walk and was hobbling on three legs. I thought I'd never get him from the field to the stable. Called the vet and she said poison foot and that it was at his toe. So she cut a hole. No pus came out, but she assured me he would be fine. Not so, I had to dress it for several days and the abcess finally burst at the coronet band. The poison had underrun his sole and eventually his sole fell off...new one underneath.
Hopefully, it's something similar and will come to a head. Another horse had a nail in the sole of his foot, Arab again, and his owner didnt notice it until the horse was lame.
Anyhow, sorry nothing positive, but hopefully, he will get better soon.
All the best Cate

I had the exact same with my youngster last year. One day 100% sound, next day hopping lame Called the farrier out and there was no reaction to hoof testers etc. Eventually called the vet out as I was convinced it must be an abscess as he was on 3 legs!! Again no reaction to hoof testers, no bounding digital pulse, but I insisted that he started digging around, and sure enough, horrid grey pus came pouring out! The abscess had formed several tracks under the sole and it took 2 further vet visits to eventually dig it all out. Phew!! Really hope you get your boy sorted soon Susan! Jx
